 Basically, I was wondering if there could be something implemented that
 would move a contact from their group to another group based on some
 change in status.

 For instance many people have cell phones that allow them to sign onto
 messengers and it'd be useful for the contacts to be switched into a
 "mobile" group when they have their cell phones connected to their instant
 messaging accounts.

 This is just one way to use this, I'm sure there are more.
