New description:

I don't want the chat window to automatically pop into the foreground when
I receive a new message, but often when I alt-tab to the chat window, I
then have to click on the tab for the window that has the unread messages.

It would be handy if, upon the window receiving focus, it would switch to
the tab that has the most recent unread messages. (Of course, if the
window already has focus, then leave unchanged as I might be in the middle
 of IMing.)

Comment:

So it would not be an option you would enable, then? :-)

If you added some sort of visual indicator to the fact it has changed
tabs, it might be more palatable. Perhaps change the background colour of
the tab for a few seconds (or even flash the background colour of the tab
between the normal colour and a darker colour for a few seconds.)
