Comment(by LimitedEdition):

 I don't know what it is with 2.5.5 having so many bugs, but now the
 desktop icon either randomly will not appear yet Pidgin still runs
 normally, or will not respond to mouse clicks when it does appear. This
 happens randomly and without any attributable cause.
