Comment:

 This almost certainly isn't going to be a pidgin bug.  The desktop icon is
 just a shortcut to the pidgin executable - if it disappears or the link is
 to the wrong place and it works intermittently, something else must be
 doing that because pidgin doesn't do any manipulation of the icon after
 installation is complete.
