Comment:

 I have no idea what you think the notify-osd plugin/daemon has to do with
 buddy icons or with the .purple/icons directory, but stop overwriting the
 contents of the icon files because what you are doing is rather
 explicitely broken. If you want to set a custom buddy icon for someone
 right-click them in the buddy list and use the Set Custom Icon menu item,
 that's why it exists.
