 Where are you seeing this status change indicated? What do you mean "every
 time [you] get a pounce"? While I don't know the capabilities of the gmail
 web interface I certainly imagine it is possible for someone to sign
 online and change status to away quickly enough that you may not notice
 (though an automated indication should show that assuming it shows all
 status changes).

 Have you considered asking them what they might be doing?
