 I'm beginning to suspect it WAS a network issue, though I'm not quite sure
 how my remote connection wasn't impacted, unless Pidgin is very sensitive
 to even minor connection failures. After initially submitting this ticket,
 my network connection went down completely, and I think my switch is
 failing. I have temporarily removed the switch from the equation, and have
 thus far not experienced any further issues, though they were extremely
 intermittent before.
