Comment:

 Assuming I understand the proxy code or the current problem at all that
 looks like it would solve it, since we should respond to an auth failure
 with the right auth response and the removed code was just an attempt to
 remove a round-trip or two. Setting to Patches Needing Review so someone
 who feels more comfortable with this code can take a look.
