 Found the fix.

 The update suggestion on the pidgin site is useless:
 http://pidgin.im/download/centos_rhel/

 However this worked:
 http://wdawe.com/index.php/pidgin-undefined-symbol-error-gst_regist?blog=1
 yum update gstreamer*
