 I have this problem as well (Windows XP) with both Pidgin 2.5.x and 2.6.2.

 If I reinstall Pidgin, AIM buddies show up until I hibernate the computer
 with Pidgin running. When it logs back in, AIM buddies do not show up.
 Quitting Pidgin and restarting it does not fix the problem. But if I turn
 off Pidgin manually and then restart (while the AIM buddies are displaying
 properly), the AIM buddies are still displayed during restart.
