 One of my users was having this same issue all day today. After lots of
 research, here's what finally worked:

 [17:23] <annes|work> So she logged into AIM express and had the same
 issue[[BR]]

 [17:23] <annes|work> People were all showing as offline[[BR]]

 [17:23] <annes|work> While in AIM Express she blocked my IM account[[BR]]

 [17:23] <annes|work> Once that was done everyone came online[[BR]]

 [17:23] <annes|work> And she was able to send messages[[BR]]

 [17:23] <annes|work> She unblocked me and then successfully IMed me[[BR]]

 [17:23] <annes|work> I IMed back[[BR]]

 [17:24] <annes|work> And everyone started showing up in Pidgin again[[BR]]

 [17:24] <annes|work> And everything is working properly now
