Comment(by deryni):

 Because my objection over it wasn't enough to prevent other people from
 thinking that in that specific case (because GTK+ makes binding escape
 impossible via the normal method, the method we discuss [wiki:"Using
 Pidgin#HowdoIbindkeystrokestomenuitems" here]) it was worth adding (to do
 this via GTK+ you need to follow [wiki:"Using
 Pidgin?version=105#HowdoImakeEscapecloseconversationwindows" these]
 directions which, I trust you'll agree, are slightly worse than what you
 currently have to do).

 You will also [ticket:5877 note] that we actually have gotten complaints
 about the fact that that checkbox breaks ctrl-w to close the window (by
 virtue of how GTK+ handles things).

 If you don't want to keep digging around to do that, keep the gtkrc file
 around when you wipe your box and just copy it back into place. The fact
 that you need to keep re-typing it isn't our fault.

 Alternatively, if you'd rather you can write a plugin to add this binding
 for you, that way you can just copy that plugin around with you instead of
 re-typing the gtkrc file.
