Comment(by deryni):

Nothing about a new install prevents you from simply placing the same
exact file in place, other than not having it around. If you want it
around easily, stick it on the web somewhere, feel free to even stick it
in our wiki if you want, that would be a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

The reason I don't want to add this checkbox is that I strongly dislike
checkboxes that expose only part of the possible functionality of
something and thus special-case a specific change people might want to
make, I thought I made it clear that the only reason I haven't yanked
(and/or didn't more strongly fight the current escape checkbox is that we
are working around a specific instance of GTK+ making things harder on
 users Just Because).

If I thought that GTK+ would ever, even for a minute, consider not hard-
grabbing Escape to close a menu (or if I thought there was a way to
override that for specific circumstances) I would indeed attempt to patch
GTK+ (or work around it in pidgin), but I don't think they would (and for
 fairly good reason).

I think you seriously underestimate the *world* of difference between re-
writing an entire many multi-thousand line program to use an entirely
different widgeting toolkit and writing a plugin to add a single
keybinding, well I don't really think you underestimate it I just think
you were trying to make a snarky point. A response I suppose I deserve
because (as I imagine you noticed) my comment about writing the plugin was
not in fact an answer (certainly not more of an answer than the comment
about keeping the gtkrc snippet/file around) and was intended entirely for
completeness and as an indication of the relative simplicity of the gtkrc
 file method.

You are welcome to go use Empathy if that suits your needs better and I
hope they have a ctrl-enter checkbox for you to click.
