 Deryni, thank you for the update.  We will create a plugin.

 As to why I want this feature: I support a multi-operator help desk system
 created for libraries, libraryh3lp.  It relies heavily on the gone
 notifications for its routing system.  Pidgin has been one of the main
 clients in use with libraryh3lp since the beginning, and we already have
 one pidgin plugin specifically for other libraryh3lp features.  We've
 compiled 2.5.9 for our users currently.
