 The buddy is using Yahoo Messenger on MacOS if that is important.

 I've made following test before reporting this bug:

 The buddy become idle, the status message changed to "idle - idle". I've
 waited 5 minutes then I closed Pidgin and started it again. The idle
 message now is 5 minutes so it seems that's the actual idle time. That's
 why I think the buddy has chosen to display idle time.


 And btw. the debug log shows this text when the buddy become idle, not
 sure if it's useful.
