 That is the exact process in the native gmail based chat.  ( hover and
 wait for tooltip > click link inside tooltip ).  This necessitates that
 the tooltip sticks around for mouseover, not sure that is possible or
 wanted -- but it works great in gmail.

 Another option would be to allow for the entire status message to be
 optionally shown in the buddy list with line-wraps, rather than showing
 only the first 30 chars or so followed by (...)  These links could then
 possible be activated directly in the buddy list.

 It seems people use status messages as another linkshare channel
 regularly, and using pidgin is a pain in the arse to open 'em.
