 Same bug is mentioned in http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/8218 ...

 It is still a problem though, which sucks... I have a faster computer now,
 but still, pidgin hangs for 3-5 seconds because of this bug....

 If pidgin must really read whole directory contents when the history
 plugin is enabled, then this time delay cannot be changed (since the OS
 itself needs that much time to read the directory list)...

 But then there is a need for a plugin/addition that simply "packs" the
 4000 logfiles of one directory into one bigger logfile....
