Comment:

 The beep you hear is produced by GTK+; we have no control over this other
 than as
 [http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#PidginbeepswheneverIpressbackspacehowdoIdisablethat
 indicated in the FAQ].  The beep is more appropriately called the "system
 bell" and is also known as the PC speaker.  The system bell's volume is
 not something we (or GTK+) can control.  The availability of a volume
 control on the system bell is quite rare and completely dependent on your
 computer's BIOS and operating system.
