Comment:

 This may be an issue with the vCard parsing code looking for the photos as
 the CDATA of <PHOTO/> if <BINVAL/> is empty, and <PHOTO/> contains some
 whitespace formatting character data.  I'll need to test to confirm that
 (and run it through valgrind).

 Is your openfire server configured to create vCards from Active Directory
 (or some other LDAP source)?

 Could you also set your plumchat account offline, set an avatar, and then
 get a debug log of enabling it?
