 I do believe the openfire server is configured to do this, as changing the
 password for Citrix changes the password for Chat as well.

 I don't know if avatars are enabled on the server or not, but I have
 followed your instructions.  I opened Pidgin, set myself as Offline, set
 the avatar and saved my account, and went Available.  After the buddy list
 finished loading, I exited Pidgin normally.  I've attached the debug log
 requested.
