Comment:

 You need a migration strategy from the old preference to the new one (and
 should possibly delete the old preference...I'm not sure if that's
 correct, though).

 I'm also not a fan of using "force" as a tri-state variable.  I'd prefer
 an enum and something like 'method' (that's not great either, but seems
 better to me)
