> Any user can set up a user-level environment variable with or without
Administrator privileges. All that's necessary is access to either the
System control panel applet, Command Prompt (cmd.exe), or Windows
Powershell. Failing that, a user that uses Pidgin from a thumbdrive can
create a .bat file with the appropriate set command and subsequently
launch pidgin.exe once the variable is set.
This is true, I was confused with the Windows configuration mechanism. In
any case, it would be best if Pidgin provided a way for users to 'select'
their preferred language setting from within Pidgin and warn the user, if
the localisation is not present, that the installation has to be rerun in
order to install the language.
I know there's a FAQ, but I think the user experience could be improved
for situations where:
1- the user did not properly select the language setting properly in the
installer
2- the Windows installer did not install the user's preferred locale
(because it was 'disabled' from the installer)
3- the system has many different localizations installed and the user
wants to switch Pidgin to one of those available
4- the user does not like how Pidgin is translated into his language and
would prefer to revert to the original (English) interface
For the first two cases, the user could be presented a list of languages
and (when Pidgin sees that the locale is not available) suggested to rerun
the installation and select the localization (following the FAQ).
For the last two cases the system would be setup and the user should be
prompted to restart Pidgin in order to get his preferred language
selection.
