Comment:
Pidgin is now working normally.
Last evening I discovered on the Yahoo server (accessed via the web
interface), that my contacts were corrupted on the server. One of the MSN
contacts was additionally associated with another of my yahoo accounts
(which was deactivated in Pidgin). The other Yahoo account was also in
another contact group. However both MSN accounts showed the bug, and the
other MSN account was only associated with the correct Yahoo
account.[[BR]]
Note that both MSN contacts were recently added via Pidgin, and since my
other Yahoo account had been deactivated, it shouldn't have been possible
to create the invalid association.[[BR]]
I then deleted the invalid contact-account pairs on the Yahoo server,
including all "MSN" only contacts. This caused my correct contact-account
association to disappear, but I was able to re-add it without problem, and
it worked fine without being re-confirmed by my contact this evening
(Thursday).[[BR]]
Subsequently, I removed the unwanted contact-account pairs on my computer,
so as to coincide with the server configuration.
As well, I deactivated more plugins, several of which I had never used.
The only ones I left were those which seemed essential to my normal use of
Pidgin.[[BR]]
By the way, most of these plugins were indeed added automatically when I
installed or updated Pidgin, especially those never used.
Pidgin was originally installed when it first appeared with the name
change from Gaim, and although little used in the last few years, was
regularly updated with new releases of Mandriva Linux, every 6 months. It
could be that a Mandriva configuration had automatically installed certain
plugins. (Mandriva tends to do that sort of thing from time to time.)
I suspect that the problem was caused by one of the plugins corrupting the
server-side contact list, which then perpetuated the problem by recreating
invalid entries on my system, despite my having deleted them.[[BR]]
In any case, the correct MSN contacts were added from the server list, as
on my computer they had disappeared when converted to "MSN" only.
Unfortunately the correct contacts were quickly converted to a duplicate
"MSN" only contacts when accessed, which was then added to the server-side
list.[[BR]]
Note that until recently I had only installed Yahoo contacts.[[BR]]
In any case, everything seems to work perfectly now.
I will progressively reinstall the plugins that I wish to use (just a few
of those uninstalled), and will report any recurrence of this problem
within the next week.
Thanks for your help.
