 Excellent tip. I don't have any 3rd-party firewall installed but I'm using
 Microsoft Forefront TMG Client for a proxy client so I decided to try
 turning that off (since it was easier than disabling my anti-virus
 software) and sure enough that did it. With TMG disabled Pidgin launches
 just fine. Re-enable and it crashes on launch. I also found the correct
 workaround for this so I can have TMG enabled. In account settings for
 MSN, on the Advanced tab there is an option for "Use HTTP Method". This
 was unchecked for me. Checking this box allows Pidgin to launch and since
 it is set to use the Global Proxy Settings then it signs in through the
 TMG client just fine. Thanks for your help! I've tried to provide enough
 details here in case anyone else hit this issue they know how to fix it.
