Comment:

 The directions at GetABacktrace include whatever debug symbol installation
 instructions we are aware of for the systems we know that information for.
 If you followed that it should get you what we need (including the initial
 output from gdb will be useful to help determine whether the debugging
 information is present).

 When running as root works the problem is going to be configuration
 related. At either the pidgin/GTK+/environment level. What specifically
 the problem is depends on at what point in startup pidgin crashes.

 Getting a more useful backtrace and possibly the debug log output (pidgin
 -d) will tell us more.
