 Any "balloon messages" are unrelated to the indicator applet which is what
 your initial comments were about, so you are in fact talking about a
 different issue than we started with. Hence my confusion and questions.

 So the problem is that the buddy icons displayed for your buddies in these
 "balloon messages" is not the avatar that is displayed for those buddies
 in the pidgin buddy list window and conversation window? That is the
 correct buddy icon is displayed in the buddy list and conversation window
 but the incorrect icon is being displayed in the "balloon messages"?

 Have you set custom buddy icons for those buddies?

 Does this work correctly for buddies that do not have a custom buddy icon
 set?

 What plugin(s) are you using for these "balloon messages"? Guifications?
 libnotify? Something else?
