 I came here to suggest this very addition to Pidgin.  I don't believe
 string matching is a necessary and agree this is a bad approach.  There
 simply should be a way to customise the protocol icon used for a
 particular *account*.  There already exists a separate "Google Talk"
 account type as an available choice,  but when you use it it converts the
 account to a standard XMPP account.  It would be great if we could have
 sub-protocols like that which extend the parent protocol and just
 customize certain things (such as customising the protocol icon and
 specifying the proper connect servers, e.g. for Google Talk and Facebook).
 Is this as simple as writing a new protocol plugin which extends an xmpp
 class?
