 I'm using Pidgin trunk on x86-64 Ubuntu 9.10, but I wouldn't expect that
 to be too relevant (although whether you're using Cyrus SASL or GNU SASL
 might).

 deesto: Has clientLogin or SSL without clientLogin ''ever'' worked for
 you?  Is it possible outgoing SSL connections are blocked?  Even
 clientLogin without SSL uses SSL for the initial authentication.
