 MarkDoliner: yes, it used to work fine, though I admit that I had stopped
 using Pidgin for a year or so when I didn't have a Linux machine.  I now
 use Pidgin in Linux at home (no proxy) and at work (behind a reverse
 proxy), and both have problems connecting when one or both of these two
 options are enabled.
