Comment:

 The enhanced history plugin (part of the Purple Plugin Pack) has that
 functionality as of 2.6.1 (N.B. version numbers unrelated to Pidgin
 versions).  At some point, that plugin may be migrated into Pidgin
 (replacing the history plugin), but someone needs to sit down and ensure
 each plugin has had the same fixes (i.e. no regressions are introduced),
 which hasn't happened yet.
