 Update:

 My brother recently installed the same build of Pidgin as I used (2.7.1)
 and added his old MSN account and did not experience any of the problems I
 had, and my account appeared as online as soon as he logged in. The main
 difference between his account and mine is that he added his contacts
 using the official client, and I added mine using Trillian.
