 Thank you; this was a tremendous help.  Now I know that my first set of
 changes that you tested are correct, at least for your case.  Given the
 first debug log that you posted (when using 2.7.2devel), it looks like you
 need to specify a username and password for your HTTP proxy, although I'm
 not sure if it'll work.  We've had several reported issues with NTLM-
 authenticating proxy servers, and basically none of us use or have access
 to such a proxy.

 For reference, if you look at that first debug log, you can see starting
 on line 18 the message returned from the proxy server indicating that you
 need to authenticate.  Other apps may do this transparently by hooking
 into some magic Windows API's for credentials; as far as I know, we don't
 know how to do that, which is why you have to specify the credentials in
 Pidgin.
