 I can confirm that it is AOL specific and the buddy list does not load.
 This is on Ubuntu 8.10 Pidgin 2.7.1.  Web based AIM also does not list
 buddy list.  I can confirm that when logged in via the web, you can
 communicate with buddies, they do not show up on your list.  Some accounts
 with a few contacts can connect without error and show buddies in pidgin
 and others cannot.  Any buddy with a significant amount of buddies shows
 no buddies and displays the dialog box with "Could not add..."
