 Is that all that happens?

 The server acknowledges your buddy list, and Pidgin didn't find any
 buddies it couldn't understand. There just aren't any responses indicating
 anyone is online.

 Have you tried logging in to Windows Live? Sometimes people find out that
 their accounts are locked or somehow unprivileged.
