Comment:

 Offhand, I can't think of why the delay would make a difference unless the
 window manager's focus stealing policies are interfering here. When the
 window doesn't get focus does it flash in the taskbar or anything? Can you
 disable the focus stealing prevention feature in GNOME and see if pidgin
 works without the patch attached?
