 Both of those actions are "user interaction" in a different way than a
 callback from a dialog closing and will likely not trigger the focus
 stealing prevention code to kick in (as that would essentially make
 everything broken). I'm not sure if you can disable the protection in
 GNOME or not, you would have to ask someone more familiar with GNOME than
 I am. If you can't figure it out and you can't find someone who can help
 you find it you can always try in some other desktop environment (I know
 you used to be able to turn the feature off/down in KDE at the very
 least).
