 The problem with your logic is the fact that my end-users never, ever
 manually typed in "I'm not here right now."   It was automatically set
 when they stepped away from their computer.

 As I wrote before, this strange behaviour ("I'm not here right now" text
 automatically added, and retained even with green/available status) is the
 #1 complaint I hear when trying to move my clients' staff to Pidgin from
 proprietary IM tools.  It's really surprising to me that there's such
 strong resistance on the part of the developers to making this behave more
 intuitively.
