Comment:

 Funny ... over at gnome-panel, someone also suggested attaching gdb from a
 console to get a backtrace. These words, one by one, I understand them. In
 aggregate, as a sentence ... ? Not so much.

 I think you're right, however, that the issue is with gnome-panel, as it
 seems to choke up an awful lot while Pidgin is back to working fine.
