Comment:

 I left pidgin connected with only my gmail account active all day today,
 as well as last night, without windows firewall enabled, and the problem
 did not occur.

 I have another issue with pidgin as well (ticket #11532) where my msn
 client is spamming message for no apparent reason (1500 messages over a
 span of 5 minutes, and it repeats this sporadically).  That might be the
 root cause of the problem and XMPP just happened to be the one that
 triggered it this time.

 I'll continue to try and replicate the problem, and if I discover any more
 information I'll post it here.
