 Thanks for the explanation.

 So when I alias a buddy, does that actually attempt to send the "name
 change" back to service (Facebook XMPP in this case)?  I assumed (wrongly
 I guess) that it was Pidgin that locally stored the alian (and merging) of
 buddies.

 I don't want to create a whole lot of work here, but wouldn't it be robust
 to store any name/alias changes (with the buddy merges) in the user's
 .purple?
