 I don't think it will be hard to maintain the list of "public muc rooms".
 They don't change often. Just put couple most reliable ones (with
 groupchat.google.com among them) and *many* users will be thankful for
 easy access to group chat.

 If there be any problems with the list maintenance, you can always remove
 the functionality.

 Let me to repeat myself - the current situation is unacceptable and you
 can not blame Google Talk for not providing proper "disco" response and do
 nothing.

 BTW, the ticket remains closed, despite the fact that the chat rooms are
 unusable out of the box...
