Comment:

 It is not possible for finch to determine if finch is or is not in focus.
 You can configure finch to emit a beep/play a sound when a new message
 comes in (by either using the gntgf plugin (shipped with finch), or
 configuring the sound settings (from the alt+a actions menu)).

 Having said that, you can try the 'pietray' dbus plugin (in
 /finch/plugins), or one of the useful plugins from
 http://arstechnica.com/software/news/2007/05/pidgin-2-0.ars/4

 pidgin-libnotify is specifically for pidgin, and it will not work with
 finch. I don't think it's supposed to cause a crash in finch, though. So I
 would be interested in a [http://pidgin.im/gdb.php backtrace] from the
 crash.
