 Well, I feel like a bit of an idiot. After more experimenting, this
 appears to be mostly a non-issue.

 I tested with official Gadu-Gadu versions 7.7, 10.2.x, 10.3.x, and
 something called "Nowe Gadu" ("nowe" is the Polish word for "new").

 The "'" problem only appears in the "Nowe Gadu" version. This version
 appears to be newer than 7.x, but older than 10.x, although the UI appears
 to be very 10.x-like. Not so coincidentally, my wife has "Nowe Gadu"
 installed on her desktop computer; this is how we ran into the problem.

 I can provide the requested debug logs if you're still interested. At this
 point, I think "upgrade the GG client to 10.x" is a perfectly reasonable
 resolution to this bug.
