Comment:

That sounds rather strange; as far as I can see from the code, we
shouldn't lose contacts in any case (and I'm at a loss how Czech
characters are different from, say, Cyrillic — I've used Cyrillic in my
group names for as long as I can remember without encountering this
issue). I tried to reproduce the problem with my test account and couldn't
(I renamed the General group to “ěščřžýáíéůú” and then to “Kamarádi”,
 restarting Pidgin both times).

Can you give some specific steps as to how to reproduce this problem? If
yes, please include them in the ticket and obtain a debug log
 (http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/TipsForBugReports#ObtainingaDebugLog). If
not, I'll need some more details:
 1. Did your girlfriend use some other client on Windows before using
Pidgin? Pidgin should store all your server-side contacts/groups in UTF-8
(which shouldn't have any problems with Czech), so it's likely that some
other client messed up group name encoding.
 2. What exactly did she do before losing her contacts? Did she do one of
the group actions you describe (moving group in buddylist, moving buddies
between groups)? Or did they just suddenly disappear one day when she
logged in? This way I will know where to look at in the code.
 3. Any kind of additional information would be great.

I'd much rather we find the underlying problem and fix it, instead of
piling hacks on top of Pidgin (your suggestions 1 and 2). Option 3 sounds
nice, but again, solving the root problem is even nicer.
