Comment:

Czech alphabet is basically Latin extended using little signs above some
 letters.

She was using QIP before Pidgin... I am not sure if earlier versions of
QIP were using UTF-8 properly. Pidgin (especially) still have issues when
communivating in Czech language. (there are plugins pidgin-qip-decoder and
pidgin-qip that are able to workaround this... - I am using this plugin,
but it seems that my girlfriend doesn't need it on windows, so plugin is
 not causing those issues)

I think that renaming is OK. problem appears when you start messing with
such groups (moving buddies inside and between them, moving such groups up
and down in buddylist, etc... i can't say how exactly this happens but
that's what she said to me and also it's how it happend to me few years
ago... but if problem is seen after restarting pidgin, it looks like
buddies/groups are only deleted from server but they are not stored again
with new name/position when moving them).

Well i think that it's very good idea to backup the blist automaticaly
(even if this bug will get fixed) and have some mechanism to restore it
(adding >100buddies manualy is not very funny thing to do - i guess i will
rather write plugin for bulk buddy adding next time it will be probably
much quicker than copypasting everything from XML :-) Blist is not so big,
so we don't have to mind the filesize because backups will probably not
grow faster than logs. We can even just make checksum of blist and backup
it only if there is no backup with same checksum. maybe we can also gzip
those backups to save some little space...
