 This could very easily be implemented by using the technique used by
 Gmarks, or other Google Bookmark plugins for Firefox.

 1) You would decide a delimiter (configurable within Pidgin).
 2) You would name your nested groups using the delimiter:

 e.g. With a delimiter of > you would name a group:
 Co-Workers>Accounting

 This is how it would be stored on all the IM servers, but it would display
 in Pidgin with Accounting being a sub-folder of "Co-Workers".

 If you logged into a non-pidgin client your groups would still carry over
 and display, just with the delimiter in the name. If you logged into any
 Pidgin client you would get the enhanced functionality.

 This both allows for portability of the groups & allows for Pidgin to do
 something extremely useful.
