 Correct, we *could* do that. There was even an XEP for exactly that sort
 of thing in the XMPP world. I thought of that idea then what I think of it
 now: it is an ugly hack that I do not like at all.

 If a client wanted to support nested display of groups despite what the
 server can actually save it could do that without any such games by simply
 letting the user arrange groups in whatever hierarchy they wanted. pidgin
 doesn't do that because it is a more complicated view to support and use.
 An alternative UI could do just that however.
