 I would suggest "This will override your locally displayed IRC user name"?
 I concur that it may not be all that helpful, however, it will (hopefully)
 hint the user to experiment and discover it's behavior. Fellow Pidgin
 users may also suggest to play with it if they've seen the note (even if
 they didn't understand it either). Still better than filing a bug report
 or sending users to google and find this thread. :)

 Or perhaps a better idea: turn it into a checkbox, captioned "Override
 locally displayed username" (which grays out the text field when
 unchecked). This makes it explicit that filling in the local alias field
 or leaving it blank results in different behavior.
 Though this breaks slightly consistency slightly with the similar MSN/ICQ
 accounts dialog, this is the best option I can think of at the moment.
