 The local alias operates consistently across all protocols/accounts in
 pidgin. That is it always does what we have been discussing and this
 behaviour is not specific to IRC. What you were seeing is what the local
 alias does that's why it exists.

 The local alias is already marked as being optional and in a separate
 section so as to minimize potential confusion (not that that has been
 particularly successful). It operates the same way a manually set alias on
 a buddy list entry works (though those are stored on the server for
 protocols that support that).

 What I'm trying to get that is that you are requesting that we document in
 the UI the basic functionality of a feature and not something out of the
 ordinary. Now, that request may in fact be perfectly reasonable (local
 alias has confused people in various ways for years) I'm just not sure
 what form reasonable documentation to this effect could actually take.
