 The alias you give your account in pidgin is local only which is why the
 field is labelled "Local alias". The Join a Chat dialog does give you a
 choice of name to use in the channel. You may or may not get a choice when
 invited to a chatroom (I'd have to test or check to be sure). How are you
 attempting to start this when it fails?
